Bathroom Luxury Makeover for a Small Guest Bath

Who says you can’t have a luxury bathroom for your guests?

You say you’re tired of the DIY look that was fine many years back when you first tackled the job?

Before Guest Bath Makeover

Tired of the builder’s grade guest bath?

Well, let’s get started with the new bathroom!  Let’s declutter the mess.  Let’s declutter the design.

Simplify.  Simplify.  Simplify.

Rather than having a many gadgets around your shower for your shampoos and such, organize them all in one long niche.  This will force you to have it all in one place and in a linear fashion.  Easier to clean as well!

One way to create interest in an otherwise bland, mostly all white bathroom is to introduce scale and pattern.  Here is a Carrerra Marble (see below) in an  arabesque pattern and also in a smaller scale than the rest of the tiles in the vanity backsplash area.  Even the tile installer loved it!

Add natural stone (Carrerra Marble) where it will not be in contact with products that will stain or heavy use of any type of liquid because they are a very porous material.

Another way to add interest is to add a hardwood pattern in tiles, also in light color.  Daltile offers a wide variety of hardwood patterns.

But all white is truly boring.  Bring a bit of color but yet keep it crisp and clean.  This particular wallpaper seen below is by Thibaut.  Thibaut has a number of different patterns that would’ve fit nicely into this space but I was looking for a pattern with a white background, simple design but yet sophisticated, something with the blue color and a slight hint of golden tan, tradition in design but yet modern in nature.  I’ve always loved a chinoiserie pattern.  So, the Thibaut Enchantment (Luzon pattern) fit all of that!  Don’t you think?

Now, let’s talk about the basics.  The one that I was excited about the most.  The pièce de résistance.  Let me introduce you to Crossville Inc’s Virtue.  Virtue tiles are treated with Hydrotect™ technology!  According to Crossville, Hydrotect technology is now a standard for the Virtue pattern.   That is great news for you.  Where else can you get a VERY white porcelain tile that almost looks like the Carrera Marble but yet out performs this natural stone on so many levels.  Unlike marble, having the Hydrotect finish on Virtue allows this porcelain tile to be stain-resistant and anti-microbial.  Because Virtue is anti-microbial, it minimizes the occurence of odors and stains and best yet, it reduces mold and mildew which is very important in a wet environment like a bathroom!

In addition, consider using smaller sized and unpolished tiles for the floor.  Virtue is available in 6 x 6, 2 x 2 hexagon, and 3×3 mosaics which, with the added grout line, provides an additional slip resistance property to the floor.

In addition to practicality in design, what else can we think about to bring luxe for your guests?  Drama!!  Let’s bring in the mood.  One way to introduce mood, of course is lighting.  This Currey and Co. light sconce is dimable.  Need I say more?

The mood is in the details!

…OK.  I will say more.  How about the Kohler sink below?  Yes.  It lights up!  OK.  I’m not gonna lie.  This undermount Kohler sink (Kallos) is made out of faceted glass and it is lit from the inside of the cabinetry by an LED strip.  This photo was taken prior about 90% completion of the renovation (the reason why you can still see the nailer block underneath).

The mood is in the detail!

To complete the experience, a guest can listen to music either in the shower or anywhere in the guest bath!  The Moxie by Kohler can actually be taken out of the shower head.  The moxie is equipped with wireless bluetooth technology.   Because it is bluetooth technology, it syncs to MP3 players, smartphones, tablets, laptop computer that are at least 32 feet away!  Which means you can have whichever one you are syncing to anywhere in the room or even outside the guest bath, as long as it is within the 32 feet.

Movable speaker!

But having shown you all that had been accomplished, let me just mention that before you pick up that hammer and saw, always start with a concept…then design development…then Construction Documents, then, well you know…The point is, don’t forget the PROCESS OF DESIGN.  It will save you money in the end.  Why guess on the outcome?  Right?  If you don’t feel comfortable with your own ideas, hire a professional and he/she will know exactly how to lead you through the process.  Here’s a photo of when the project was just a concept and then to actual finished project!
